WoCC Sundays
[Please Note: WoCC has suspended its Sunday assemblies. This page will be updated when Sunday assemblies begin again.]
The people of WoCC assemble each Sunday at 10:30 AM in the Reuter Family YMCA located in the Biltmore Park development of south Asheville, NC.
Because we are a church of missionaries, our greatest desire is to come to you...meeting and serving you in the places that are comfortable for you; work sites, neighborhoods and recreation spots. Even with that, we realize that Sunday mornings are a natural time for you to visit with us and we want to welcome you, for sure.
If you’re considering spending a Sunday morning with us, there are a few things we’d like you to know:
- FirstServe...that’s what we call our Sunday assembly. During FirstServe, the people of WoCC gather with guests to share friends, serve without strings, and celebrate change. We also look ahead to the next weeks/months--planning and implementing how we’ll RESPOND to Need as Christ. FirstServe is fun, social, laid-back, celebratory and hands-on. Additionally, we try to accomplish a small service project each Sunday morning.
- Although Sunday is critical to the function of WoCC, it’s no more important than what we do Monday-Saturday. This is dramatically different from most churches and because of this, you’ll find FirstServe to be more basic and simple than many attractional churches--this is just a natural outflow of us choosing to expend our resources (time, talent, money) where we feel God is calling us--in the mission field and on the people who aren’t a part of the church.
- To further underscore our commitment to God’s missionary calling on our church, we actually assemble in our primary mission field...the Reuter Family YMCA. We think you’ll like the YMCA environment...it’s comfortable, familiar, convenient, safe, quiet and fun!
- We promise that each time we assemble we will proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ--the whole reason we serve. We strongly believe that the gospel is for all to hear--both believers and non-believers--and that often upon hearing we are compelled to respond to the kindness of God.
WoCC Sundays begin at 10:30 AM when the doors of the YMCA open for FirstServe. Parking is plentiful and located in the Town Square area of Biltmore Park and in the YMCA parking lot adjacent to and to the rear of the building. The entrance for FirstServe is on the front side of the YMCA just off Town Square. Handicap parking is located around the YMCA...just watch for the signs.
If you come a bit early you’ll have time to grab some coffee and eats while meeting folks and catching up on the week's activities. Our nursery opens at 10:15 AM and the Covenant Kids Children's Ministry is ready to roll at that time.
We understand that church "style and form" is an important consideration for many and so we offer these thoughts concerning FirstServe:
- As part of a voluntary tradition, people attending FirstServe are encouraged to bring a can of food each Sunday to be used in our hunger basket projects--again, this is completely voluntary
- The music--which is mostly performed by our band, instead of being sung congregationally--is contemporary in style, emphasizes biblically accurate lyrics, and occassionally includes secular selections
- Most assemblies include a hands-on service project or planning for an upcoming service opportunity
- We socialize a lot and snacks/drinks will be available
- We pray during FirstServe, but we do so with gentleness and respect for our guests--never asking them to pray aloud unless they want to
- Dress is casual...but wear what you’re comfortable in
- We encourage families (ages 7+) to attend FirstServe together--we have activities for the younger FirstServe attenders
- We welcome all people...just come as you are
We’re working to extend relevant, competent and loving Christian hospitality to each and every guest that spends a Sunday with us. We trust that guests will find warm, friendly and welcoming people at each FirstServe and that they’ll be left with a sense that their visit was greatly appreciated.
Most importantly, we desire to keep the focus on the reason for FirstServe...because Jesus first served us!
