Work of Christ Church

FAQs

On this page, please find answers to questions we often receive concerning Work of Christ Church (WoCC). If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact us.

What About my Children?

Families are valued by WoCC and we are blessed to assemble on Sundays in a YMCA with first rate children’s facilities that are fun, safe, clean and brightly lit. Our desire is to strengthen families and equip and support parents as they disciple their children. We hope to help families move closer together and our ministry to children has been developed with this goal in mind. The following link will help you learn more about Covenant Families.

Why do You Meet in a YMCA?

This is a great question and one that speaks directly to our understanding of God’s purposes for our church. It’s really important to understand that we’re not just meeting at the Y until we can find a bigger space or build a big church building. Instead, we are a people primarily committed to the missionary calling of God on our lives and we believe this calling is to the Reuter Family YMCA as our unique and primary mission field. We desire to be an integral part of the Reuter Family YMCA and to offer our lives in service to its members, staff and guests...all in the name of Jesus. For more detailed information on the YMCA and our calling to it, please see Why the "Y".

What's the History of WoCC?

In January 2009, Greg Douglas--WoCC Pastor--presented a proposal to the Executive Director of the Reuter Family YMCA outlining the plan for a new church start within the YMCA. This proposal was accepted by the YMCA and over the next six months formal agreements were struck and WoCC began integrating into Reuter Family; serving, blessing and loving the staff and members in the name of Jesus.

Lighthouse Church of Mount Pleasant, SC--the church Greg Douglas was pastoring at prior to leaving to start WoCC--was integral in getting WoCC up and running. In addition to a significant financial gift, Lighthouse agreed to provide eldership over WoCC for a minimum of two years; giving WoCC time to develop elders from within the newly forming body.

In October 2009, a missionary couple from Lighthouse Church relocated to Asheville in response to God’s call to help Greg and his family and to be a part of WoCC’s formation and birth. On the 4th of October, the initial Sunday gathering was held.

In just a short time, WoCC has become an important part of the Reuter Family YMCA and the people of WoCC are looking forward to living out many years of God’s purposes together.

How Do I Get to Know People at WoCC?

If you live in the community of south Asheville, chances are you may know someone at WoCC already; or at least have significant common ground with someone here. WoCC understands that meaningful relationships are becoming more and more rare in our culture, but we believe that truly authentic Christ-following can only be done along with other people. This sets up a challenge--to see the people comprising WoCC move into meaningful relationships when the cultural flow is opposing this.

In response, we strive to facilitate connecting with people through two main opportunities:

  • Missionary Calling--the people of WoCC are focused on RESPONDING to Need as Christ Monday-Saturday; intentionally integrating ourselves into our host community and culture for the purpose of building relationships with people through service. First, this helps us connect to people simply through our “being there.” Second, as we serve people in the community and culture, we can always invite them to help us serve...and many will. This is another chance to connect people together.
  • Sundays--even though we live in a largely post-Christian culture, Sunday mornings still attract many guests who are looking to develop relationships within a spiritual context. WoCC assembles weekly for FirstServe, providing another opportunity for us to connect people together.

What Should I Wear?

WoCC values the creation of a comfortable environment for people seeking a deeper understanding of God and desiring to spend time in his presence...we welcome all people. We also want people to be comfortable in what they wear, so you may see someone in a shirt and tie or in cutoffs and flip flops. We just want you to feel at home so wear what you want. Please see WoCC Sundays for more on Sunday mornings.
